Booking.com Data Breach Exposes Customer Information
In a troubling reminder of cybersecurity vulnerabilities, Booking.com has informed customers of a recent data breach affecting their reservation details. On April 13, the travel giant disclosed that unauthorized third parties accessed sensitive information, including names, email addresses, and phone numbers.
The breach appears to have stemmed from compromised hotel partners, with the criminal group Storm-1865 employing phishing tactics to install malware on hotel employees’ systems. This data can be exploited for phishing scams, including impersonating hotels to extract further payments from unsuspecting guests.
The impact is significant, with 532 reported scams in the UK alone, resulting in losses of nearly $470,000. Users of Booking.com are advised to remain vigilant, avoiding any requests for payment verification and directly contacting properties for confirmation.
