Cybersecurity Alert: Malware Attack Targets Popular CPU Tools
In a recent cybersecurity incident, hackers compromised the CPUID project’s API, altering the download links on its official website to distribute malicious files for the widely used CPU-Z and HWMonitor tools. These applications, essential for monitoring computer hardware health, are utilized by millions of users.
Affected users discovered that the altered links redirected them to a trojanized version of HWiNFO, disguised under the name HWiNFO_Monitor_Setup. This malware has been flagged by several antivirus engines and is suspected to function as an infostealer. Although the original files remained untouched, the compromised distribution links posed a significant threat.
To protect against similar attacks, users should always download software from official sources and verify file integrity. CPUID has since resolved the issue and restored safe downloads.
