Massive Malware Attack Targets Developers in npm and PyPI Ecosystems
A new malware attack, attributed to the TeamPCP threat group, has compromised hundreds of packages on npm and PyPI, targeting developers with credential-stealing malware. The attack began with the hijacking of valid OpenID Connect tokens that allowed the attackers to publish malicious versions of popular packages, including those from TanStack and Mistral AI.
Over 400 compromised packages have been identified, affecting tools like Bitwarden CLI and SAP packages. The malware stealthily exfiltrates sensitive developer secrets such as GitHub tokens and AWS credentials, making detection challenging due to its use of encrypted traffic.
Developers who have downloaded affected packages should assume their credentials are exposed. It is crucial to check for compromised versions, rotate all credentials, and audit developer machines for any remnants of the malware.
