North Korean Hackers Target Android Users with New BirdCall Malware
In a recent cybersecurity incident, the North Korean hacker group known as APT37, or ScarCruft, has launched a new variant of its notorious BirdCall malware, now targeting Android devices. This backdoor has been delivered through a compromised video game platform, sqgame.net, primarily catering to users in the Yanbian region of China, a known crossing point for North Korean defectors.
The newly developed Android version of BirdCall is capable of extracting sensitive information, including call logs, contact lists, and even screenshots. Users of Android devices who downloaded applications from this compromised platform are at risk.
To mitigate exposure, experts recommend downloading apps solely from official app stores and maintaining up-to-date security software. Given the malware’s extensive capabilities and targeted nature, this incident is rated as High risk for affected users.
