Cybersecurity Alert: Fake Claude Website Distributes PlugX Malware
In a concerning cybersecurity incident, a fake website mimicking Anthropic’s popular AI tool, Claude, has been discovered. This site, which boasts a nearly identical appearance to the official Claude page, offers a “Pro” version of the software to unsuspecting users.
Upon downloading the provided ZIP file, victims unknowingly install not just the legitimate Claude application, but also a hidden PlugX malware that allows attackers remote access to their systems. This attack primarily affects Claude’s growing user base, which has surged to 290 million monthly visits.
The impact is significant, as the malware could lead to credential theft and system compromise. Users are advised to check their Startup folder for suspicious files, disconnect from the internet if affected, and run a complete system scan.
Risk Level: High
