Malware Alert: Hack-for-Hire Targets MENA Journalists on WordPress

Title: Targeted Phishing Campaign Hits Journalists and Activists in MENA Region

A recent hacking campaign, suspected to be linked to the Indian government, has targeted journalists, activists, and officials in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA). Notably, Egyptian journalists Mostafa Al-A’sar and Ahmed Eltantawy faced spear-phishing attacks aimed at compromising their Apple and Google accounts.

The attackers used fake job offers and messaging apps like WhatsApp to lure victims into entering their credentials on fraudulent sites. Although Al-A’sar and Eltantawy’s accounts were not breached, an anonymous Lebanese journalist fell victim, resulting in a complete compromise of their Apple account.

This operation highlights a growing trend in surveillance and data harvesting, with potential impacts on civil society across various countries, including the U.S. To protect against such threats, users should be cautious with unsolicited messages and verify links before sharing personal information.
