Ransomware Attack Disrupts Healthcare Services at UMMC

In February 2026, the University of Mississippi Medical Center (UMMC) fell victim to a significant ransomware attack, crippling its electronic health record system across 35 clinics and over 200 telehealth sites. This incident forced the cancellation of critical chemotherapy appointments and delays in non-emergency surgeries, leaving many patients in distress.

The attack highlights a growing trend, as 93% of U.S. healthcare organizations reported at least one cyber incident in 2025. Additionally, payment processing network BridgePay experienced a similar attack, showcasing the widespread threat across various industries.

To protect against such attacks, organizations should implement strong cybersecurity measures, including data encryption and regular backups.

With ransomware incidents increasing by 49% year-over-year, the threat continues to pose a substantial risk to essential services and sensitive data.
