China’s TA416 Hacks European Governments with PlugX Phishing

Cybersecurity Alert: Rising Threats from TA416 Targeting European Governments

A new wave of cyberattacks has emerged, with the China-aligned group TA416 targeting European government and diplomatic organizations since mid-2025. This campaign marks a shift after two years of reduced activity in the region. The attackers are deploying malware, specifically the PlugX backdoor, using sophisticated methods like phishing emails that exploit OAuth mechanisms to bypass security defenses.

Countries affiliated with the EU and NATO are particularly at risk, with impacts including potential data breaches and compromised governmental communications. The attacks have also extended to the Middle East amid ongoing geopolitical tensions.

To protect against these threats, organizations should enhance email security measures, conduct regular phishing simulations, and ensure software is updated.

Risk Level: High
Given the targeted nature and advanced tactics used by TA416, vigilance is crucial for those in affected sectors.
