European Commission Faces Cyberattack by ShinyHunters Gang
The European Commission has confirmed a significant data breach involving its Europa.eu web platform, attributed to the notorious ShinyHunters extortion group. This attack reportedly compromised at least one of the Commission’s Amazon Web Services (AWS) accounts, leading to the theft of over 350 GB of sensitive data.
While the Commission stated that no disruption occurred to its websites and internal systems remained secure, the impact is serious. Data including databases, confidential documents, and contracts may have been exposed. The ShinyHunters gang has already shared some of this data on their dark web leak site, raising concerns about the potential misuse of this information.
To protect against similar threats, organizations are advised to enhance their cybersecurity protocols, conduct regular security audits, and educate employees about the risks of phishing attacks.
