Cybersecurity Alert: Russian Phishing Botnet Leader Sentenced After Ransomware Attacks on U.S. Companies
In a significant development in the fight against cybercrime, Ilya Angelov, a 40-year-old Russian national, has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in managing a phishing botnet that facilitated ransomware attacks against 72 U.S. companies.
Between 2017 and 2021, Angelov’s group, known as Mario Kart, conducted extensive phishing campaigns, sending up to 700,000 emails daily. This led to significant breaches, resulting in over $14 million in extortion payments as victims were locked out of their networks by the notorious BitPaymer ransomware.
